What does an Educational Therapist do?
An educational therapist provides individualized, intensive support for students with learning differences or disabilities. Through assessment and one-on-one work, educational therapists work to understand each student's unique strengths, needs, and learning profile. They work closely with students, families, and other professionals to address the underlying sources of learning challenges and develop the skills, strategies, and confidence students need to become more independent learners. Grounded in the science of learning, educational therapy considers the many factors that influence learning, including academic skills, thinking processes, and emotional well-being.
How are Educational Therapists Different from Tutors?
Tutoring often focuses on helping students strengthen skills or improve their performance in a particular subject. Educational therapy takes a broader approach, looking beyond what a student is struggling with to understand why they may be struggling and what will help them make progress.
Educational therapists use both formal and informal assessments, observations, and ongoing work with students to understand how they learn and identify the skills and strategies they need. They tailor instruction to each student's individual needs while also helping students build confidence, develop effective approaches to new learning challenges, and become more independent in their learning.
